Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
