While Sunbathers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Depicts Beach Patrol Dashing ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, has always considered the famous coast as her own backyard. On a recent weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, heard cracking sounds reverberating across the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and no one could see them,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled a crisis was unfolding.

Positioned on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the hill in their swimwear, she became aware of someone coming up behind her. This turned out to be a rescuer, dashing to Bondi without shoes from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” Ching describes. “He was zooming past. He was the only one running in the path that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and barefoot … He’s running into something that surely every part of you would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage During Tragedy

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, officers and ambulance crews treating dozens of the injured.

Community Reaction and Support

Doolan’s actions was just one of many to come out of the local area, with the patrol base next to the location of the attack serving as a temporary treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen responding bravely, such as entering the surf to rescue people who were struggling.

Following the tragedy, statements of gratitude were shared. An online statement shared appreciation for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The squad of lifeguards issued a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your thoughtful words and encouragement. We are touched by the compassion shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the aim that it aids those impacted.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the governing body that employs many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the team rose to the occasion from the instant the shooting began through to late that night.

“There have been so many powerful stories, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a council representative.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our internationally renowned beaches safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be highly praised.

“As we grieve and process the horror of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we consider just how much good we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
