Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to ignore the noise.
“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Has the showrunner Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team are not listening by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
