It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like Woody (the actor) and the space ranger (the voice talent), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her outfit.

It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
