The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club history in a pivotal European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his Real debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize fans might be astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent either country at the highest level.

According to international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team chase future success.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
