People have gathered around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the assurance that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised on Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Peace Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking representative involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official explained the morning session concluded without significant progress, amid differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have yet to produce any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the region

Civilian Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.

Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do every compromise required for the abducted to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Research now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of military attacks and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people indicated the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Health Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more victims had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while looking for assistance to the south region, health workers said.
