The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
A freshly coined acronym came to light several months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to doctors including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is uncommon for medical staff to treat a young patient who has seen the death of their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.
An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Reported Truce
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is accused of. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, apparently, is what global togetherness resembles.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems treated differently.
A Selective Vision
Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering
The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
