Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
