Lando Norris Claims Debut Formula One Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina Despite Max Verstappen's Race Triumph.
Through an exhibition of nerveless driving, the McLaren driver has clinched his first Formula One world championship by achieving P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. A podium was all that was required for the British driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his teammate at McLaren Oscar Piastri came home in second.
The driver performed exactly what was needed in an incredibly high-pressure race at the Abu Dhabi track, featuring a series of audacious overtakes, with impeccable execution from both the driver and his team.
An Important Feat for British Motorsport and McLaren
In taking his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to accomplish the feat. It also brings to an end McLaren's drivers’ championship drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Furthermore, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the drivers’ and constructors’ double back in 1998.
This marks a stunning turnaround for the team, since a low point in the middle of the last decade when they ended up ninth in the constructors’ championship. The revival has been helmed by boss Zak Brown and, more recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled outfit with a race-winning car.

A Tale of Two McLaren
Regarding his teammate Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the season, there was obvious disappointment at faltering in the closing stages. A series of poor performances and some errors, such as a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. Being so fast in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.
Max Verstappen was also brilliant to force the fight to the wire. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the win, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he fell just short of having enough to overhaul Norris, ending up just two points behind.
Sealing the Deal with Clinical Execution
Norris closed out his success with clinical precision to take the championship that had been within reach but eluded him as McLaren struggled at the last two races. First a DSQ in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.
This represents no little accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, each one with McLaren. He remained loyal to the team even during tough periods, convinced they would come good. That faith was rewarded in Abu Dhabi.
He has done a remarkable job to persist with his task, keeping his composure and belief during periods under the cosh. Having lost the lead to Piastri after Saudi Arabia, he still worked at maximising what he could.

The Decisive Race
In the race, Verstappen kept his lead through the first corner, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.
This demonstrated the McLarens were allowed to fight, but put Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in traffic, but he passed rivals quickly and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.
During the race, he made an incredibly bold move to overtake two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull told their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a breathtaking assault where Norris went up the inside, almost completely off the track.
The incident was looked at by the race officials, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This bold move unimpeded was vital to his championship bid.
Contrasting Fortunes
While Norris became the first British driver to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the difference in fortunes between the two was stark. As the young guns fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.
Making his debut with the Italian team had been greeted with excitement but has yielded what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a top-three finish. He has appeared jaded in the closing races and will aim to rebuild over the winter.
