Sixty days after receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” the nation's political system, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted instigator – who's been under home confinement in his residence while a number of judicial steps and petitions unfold – is largely predicted to be jailed in the near future, amidst mounting rumors that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security prison.

Past Comments on Prisoners

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the right-wing ex- paratrooper showed minimal compassion for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish behind bars, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Incarceration Location Debate

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda top-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent attempt to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, said he predicted the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s acute intestinal ailments – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 presidential election race – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to cope if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted witnessing cells accommodating 40 detainees: “It's practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We talked to the convicts and they complain, unsurprisingly, of the horrible cuisine,” continued the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

He is not the sole person expressing views prior to the former president’s predicted imprisonment.

Authoring in a prominent newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “severe” finale to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to see “the greatest wrong in its history”.

“It represents an injustice that eats away the souls of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

But his expected incarceration has also warmed the feelings of millions other people who think he should be imprisoned for conspiring to block his successor from assuming office – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's political party, commented: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dark cell. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in solitary confinement. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain respectful handling – but proper handling behind bars. He can’t continue being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the severe conditions of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Only now has the extreme right – which has always argued that civil liberties should not be for offenders – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what conditions are really like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading handling”.

Possible Jail Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about thousands of inmates, his more likely assigned facility seems to be a adjacent prison for law enforcement and other “unique” detainees called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are much more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nonetheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro had while living in the spectacular official residence, about 20 kilometers away.

Based on information, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – about the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and includes a 12 square meter WC with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and also a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report suggested.

Ideological Comments

The lawmaker condemned the talked-about idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a form of retaliation” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his outcome in the {
