European Union Economic Leaders Convene to Debate Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Russian Assets for Kyiv Support

European Union economic leaders are gathering in the EU capital this Thursday to address the union's economic priorities, including the pressing question of financial support to Ukraine.

Ukraine's President Warns Nation's Survival Relies on Allies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a latest interview that the country's survival depended on obtaining additional financial aid from allies.

“We trust, with luck, we will get the necessary funding,” he stated to reporters. If not, “We will have to find another solution, it’s a question of our survival. That’s why we need it very much. We rely on partners.”

European Authorities Pushes for €140bn Compensation Funding

The European Commission continues to aim to persuade participating countries – and Belgium, that is currently blocking the plan amid juridical concerns – to proceed with a €140 billion financial compensation based on frozen Russian assets.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized this morning that it would be “the most effective way to sustain Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”

Decision Delayed Till December Meeting

A definitive resolution on the issue has been deferred till the European Council meeting in the last month, as the financial support needed early next year.

Talks Coincide with Corruption Scandal in Kyiv

But the talks are happening during a tricky time for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy had to move to contain growing public outrage in Ukraine regarding a corruption scandal in the power industry, firing two ministers allegedly involved in participating in a extensive bribery scheme.

Denmark's economic affairs minister Stephanie Lose was asked about her reaction to the allegations, and insisted that there was commitment to keep aiding Ukraine.

“Naturally, The country will have to continuously work with reforms, strengthening all parts of the nation [and] including fighting graft … but there shouldn’t be any doubt that Europe stands firmly behind Ukraine,” she said.

Other European Developments Monitored

Separately, analysts will be monitoring the Netherlands where the parliament convenes to examine potential ways ahead in the government formation process, the Italy-Albania consultations in the Italian capital offering the most recent opportunity to enjoy the remarkable Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a series of top-tier meetings throughout the continent, including the Alliance's Mark Rutte’s trip to a military installation in Germany.

Lots for us to report on.

It’s November 13, 13 November 2025, and this is European Updates.

Welcome.
