Crew Member Discloses Depression After Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the landing.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
