Afghan Rulers Used Left-Behind British Technology to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Forces, Investigation Is Told

A whistleblower has disclosed an official investigation that the UK abandoned classified equipment enabling the militant group to track down Afghans who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Endangers Numerous at Risk

The source, called Person A, stated that people concerned by the information breach were instructed to move homes and switch their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's response of a massive breach of private information involving almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to relocate to the United Kingdom to escape the regime.

The Information Breach Was Discovered

A data file containing confidential details, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally household data, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at UK special forces headquarters in last year.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when details of several individuals who had requested to move to Britain appeared on social media.

Regime's Resources

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have the same sort of facilities that we have,” Person A informed MPs.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Once they acquire mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. This is exactly how specialized teams accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces had access to necessary encryption, the whistleblower declared: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation suggested that no fewer than forty-nine kin and co-workers of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was enacted in August 2023 and prevented all details concerning it from being made public until July 2025.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were supporting that they had “concerns that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“We advised that they change residence if they could and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if authorities obtained these details, would lead to their location being found,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower argued that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to conclude that the acquisition of the information by the Taliban was “not significantly alter current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not standing up to the Taliban; they remain concealed. Everything boils down to past work history.”

She detailed terrible violence suffered by affected individuals, involving electrocution, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to try to get households to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
